Most French horn students need an outline of basic procedures to help them
protect and maintain their French horn. Following a regular French horn
maintenance schedule offers some definite advantages: the rather large capital
investment that a French horn represents is protected and enhanced;
small problems can be corrected before French horn become big
problems; and the cost of expensive repairs and over hauls is
noticeably diminished.
A key to good horn playing is a well maintained horn. If your valves are slow
or sticky, then you won't be able to play up to your potential

Before you play French horn

1. Lift your French horn from its case by the bell and large tubing (not by the
valve levers or small slides.)
2. Every two or three days apply French horn rotor oil to the valves.
3. Place the French horn mouthpiece into the mouthpiece receiver and gently twist it
in.(When your French horn mouthpiece become stuck, do not attempt to force take it out
by using tools.)

When you finish playing French horn

1. Remove the French horn mouthpiece and put it in its special comportment.
2. Wipe the fingerprints off your French horn with your polish cloth.
3. Don't store anything (e.g. towel) on top of your French horn in its case as they
will push on the levers and slides and bend your French horn.

French horn Weekly Maintenance

1. The French horn mouthpiece should be cleaned weekly using warm water
and soft liquid soap and your mouthpiece brush.
2. Using slide grease to lubricate slides if the French horn slides 
difficult to move.
3. Make sure French horn valves more easily as well. Oil valves once
each week or more often as needed.
4. Every few months the French horn should be taken apart and given
a bath. (Hot water will damage your French horn!)
